Passage A · The shelf that changed the market
Every Saturday, traders at Taman Jaya Market used to throw away boxes of bruised fruit and vegetables that were still safe to eat. Some items looked imperfect; others simply remained unsold when the market closed. Fourteen-year-old Nur noticed the waste while helping at her aunt’s stall. She suggested placing the usable produce on a free community shelf.
The traders were doubtful. They worried that the shelf would attract pests, create more cleaning work or encourage customers to wait for free food instead of buying it. Nur therefore proposed a four-week trial. Volunteers would inspect every item, record its source and remove anything unsuitable. The shelf would open only during the final thirty minutes of trading.
During the trial, most visitors took modest amounts. A nearby café collected soft tomatoes for soup, while a residents’ group delivered produce to elderly people who could not visit the market. Sales did not fall. In fact, several traders reported that customers appreciated their effort and returned more often.
The project was not perfect. On one wet weekend, volunteers failed to cover the shelf and much of the produce spoiled. Instead of ending the trial, the team added a waterproof cover and a clear duty schedule. After four weeks, the traders voted to keep the shelf. Nur says its greatest achievement is not the amount of food saved, but the change from “someone should solve this” to “here is what we can try”.
